Before and after vein treatments

VenClose

VenClose, also known by other names such as ClosureFast™ and VNUS Closure, is a minimally invasive procedure performed to treat patients suffering from varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency. This minimally invasive treatment uses radiofrequency energy to deliver thermal heat to the affected vein wall, which shrinks the vessel and forces its closure. Blood is then naturally redirected to other healthy veins. This method is efficient, relatively painless and can be tailored to the particular needs and body type of each patient. Depending on your condition, you may be more suited to a radiofrequency vein treatment like VenClose than laser-based procedures. Before your procedure, Dr. Leary will conduct a full examination of your vein health and consider your concerns to determine the right treatment for your needs.

Varicose veins refer to veins that have become visibly enlarged, twisted or tangled. While some patients see it as a cosmetic issue, if left untreated they may experience pain or discomfort in the legs as a result. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)is a more severe condition where the vein valves in the legs are not properly functioning, causing blood to collect in the veins and preventing natural blood circulation. This condition often results in bulging or protruding veins, discoloration of the skin or swelling in the legs, which can be quite uncomfortable for affected patients. VenClose treatments can help to correct these symptoms and reduce the health risks associated with varicose veins or CVI by using radiofrequency energy to get rid of the problem veins.

The Procedure

During the procedure, the targeted vein is accessed through ultrasound guidance. A catheter is then inserted into the vessel to deliver controlled heat to the vein walls using precise radiofrequency energy. This method prompts a collagen response that effectively closes the vein, and the blood is then redirected to healthy veins, reducing or eliminating the appearance of protruding or tangled veins. VenClose is an excellent, non-surgical alternative to treating varicose veins or venous insufficiency and achieving better overall vein health. The VenClose procedure may take between 30 to 45 minutes, and is usually performed under local anesthetic at our well-equipped Newport Beach location for patient comfort.

Recovery

Recovery after the VenClose procedure is generally quick and uncomplicated. After treatment, a small bandage is placed over the insertion site, and Dr. Leary may provide additional compression to aid healing if necessary. The procedure is efficient, minimally invasive and requires minimal downtime. Some patients experience mild aching in the area, though this usually disappears within a few days. Patients who undergo the VenClose procedure can usually resume their regular activities immediately after treatment. However, it is best to avoid strenuous activity and extended standing during this time. Most patients experience a significant improvement in their symptoms within two weeks of their procedure.

Other Varicose Vein Treatment Options

Dr. Leary uses both VenClose and laser treatment options in his office, depending on the patient’s particular anatomy. Both VenClose and laser ablation are quick and effective for treating venous insufficiency. Both use heat to close the problem vein from the inside. Dr. Leary’s laser machine is a 1470nm laser, which is a better and more advanced option than some of the earlier lasers that actually cauterized the problem vein. The 1470nm laser has proven to be highly effective yet very gentle, and results in less post-operative discomfort, and is Dr. Leary’s choice when it comes to very short problem veins. Because it can pass through more tortured and curved veins a little more easily than VenClose, Dr. Leary usually recommends also laser ablation to patients with that condition. Patients with large straight veins in contrast, respond very well to VenClose. Dr. Leary will decide which procedure is best for you after a vein examination.

Which Treatment is Right for You?

The most suitable treatment for you will depend on your condition and medical needs. Dr. Leary conducts an in-depth examination before your procedure to determine which method will most effectively address your concerns. Both procedures help to alleviate symptoms of venous insufficiency and reduce the risk of blood clots. Both procedures are equally gentle and effective with post-operative recovery the same.
