What is Botox?
Botox Cosmetic is a purified version of the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, also known as the botulism toxin. When it is injected into the muscles in trace amounts, the formulation reduces wrinkles that form as a result of muscle contraction. Known as dynamic wrinkles, these lines typically appear around the forehead and eyes. While they are only present when facial expressions are made in the beginning, the wrinkles can gradually become etched into the skin, so they are visible all the time. These creases, known as static wrinkles, can detract from your appearance, making you look older than you feel.
Botox suppresses the muscles by acting as a neuromodulator, which blocks communication to the muscle that tells it to contract. When neurotransmitters are unable to reach the muscle, preventing movement and thereby reducing the appearance of the consequential wrinkles. As you continue to receive Botox treatments, your muscles may adjust to the toxin blocking their movement, resulting in fewer wrinkle-causing expressions. This process could result in smoother skin that lasts longer, allowing you to space your Botox treatments even further apart. Instead of coming in every three months, you may find that over time you can schedule appointments every five or six months without compromising your results.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than seven million Botox procedures were done in 2016 alone. These numbers marked Botox as the most performed nonsurgical cosmetic procedure for that year. This procedure is effective on all skin types and tones and is nearly as popular with men as it is with women.
Quick Procedure, Quick Results
Botox injections are performed right in our Newport Beach, Orange County office at our medspa and take just a few minutes to complete in most cases. Patients find the procedure is relatively comfortable and do not typically require any numbing cream or ice before treatment. The needle used to administer the medication is small and does not get injected deeply enough to cause any significant pain.
Once your injections are completed, you may return to your daily routine right away. Aside from some possible mild swelling, there are not usually side effects from Botox that would reveal you just had a cosmetic procedure performed. However, you may return to work with a distinctly smoother appearance that shaves off a few years and boosts your confidence level. Results will continue to improve a week or two after your session, so if you are scheduling Botox in anticipation of a significant event or vacation, remember to plan ahead.

Because Botox works primarily on dynamic wrinkles, there are a few treatment areas where it produces superior results to other anti-aging treatments. Those areas include:
- Lines that extend across the forehead
- Vertical creases between the eyebrows
- Horizontal lines on the top of the nasal bridge
- Subtle lines fanning out from the outer corners of the eyes
Our providers will assess your concerns to determine whether Botox will be the best treatment option for you. If you have other symptoms of aging you would like to address, we also provide a wide range of dermal fillers to smooth away wrinkles around the nose and mouth and restore youthful volume in the midface. Dermal fillers can even be combined with Botox in a single treatment session to help you achieve all your aesthetic goals in a single appointment. Known as a liquid facelift, this combined procedure can help take years off your appearance.
Is Botox right for you?
When you come in for an exam at our medspa in Newport Beach, ask one of our providers whether you could benefit from a few Botox injections. With a thorough evaluation of your skin and a discussion about your treatment goals, we will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for you. Keep in mind that Botox is a temporary injection, which means the effectiveness of the medication will gradually wear off and your wrinkles will return. While the quickness of a Botox procedure is attractive, you will need to schedule sessions every few months if you want to maintain your results.
The safety of Botox has been proven over the decades that this medication has been in use.
