Hand Rejuvenation With Sclerotherapy
While many people go to great lengths in an attempt to maintain a youthful facial appearance, they often forget about their hands. Unfortunately, veiny hands can easily reveal your age or make you look older than you are.
Large, bulging hand veins are normal and more of a cosmetic problem than a sign of a health concern. However, they are bothersome for many people and can cause insecurities about the appearance of their hands.
Fortunately, our skilled vein care specialists in Newport Beach can restore your youthful, beautiful hands with sclerotherapy.
What Causes Visible Veins on the Hands?
Workouts and doing activities with your hands can cause the veins to swell due to increased blood flow. However, this is usually temporary, and the veins return to normal once your blood pressure goes back down.
Others have veins that can be constantly seen through the skin. Dryness and consistent sun exposure can lead to lost collagen and elastin in the skin on the hands. These environmental elements combined with aging factors can cause thinning of the skin and a loss of fat beneath the skin’s surface. This results in a lack of youthful volume, and bulging or dilated veins can become visible through the skin on the backside of the hands.
Spider veins, reticular veins and varicose veins can appear on the hands due to disrupted blood flow or valve malfunctions within the veins. Spider veins look like squiggly red, purple or blue lines and are generally very thin. Reticular veins are slightly larger than spider veins and less windy. These blue or green dilated blood vessels sit just below the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are often larger, thicker and more prominent. The swollen blue or purple veins bulge and appear twisted through the skin.
How Can Sclerotherapy Rejuvenate My Hands?
Patients affected by visibly dilated or protruding veins on their hands can benefit from hand rejuvenation with sclerotherapy. This minimally invasive treatment is performed in our office with local anesthesia and can usually be completed in under an hour. Sclerotherapy is hands down one of the most effective treatments for hand veins.
During this procedure, a sclerosing solution is precisely injected into the targeted veins through a tiny needle. Once injected, the solution causes the inside walls of the veins to become sticky, and the veins collapse. The body then harmlessly absorbs the closed veins, and they disappear.
The sclerotherapy treatment process effectively removes visible veins from the hands.
Supplemental Technologies That Can Be Used With Hand Sclerotherapy
Cryotherapy
Cryo sclerotherapy (cryotherapy with sclerotherapy) involves the delivery of cool air to the skin of the treatment area as the sclerosing injections are performed. This technique numbs the skin and reduces discomfort in sensitive areas like the hands and ankles, making the treatment nearly pain-free. The bursts of super-cooled air also help reduce inflammation and speed healing time so patients can see their results faster.
Lights for Vein Mapping
For patients who have multiple small visible veins such as spider veins, we use specialized lights to find and target the feeder veins. Feeder veins are slightly larger damaged blood vessels that connect the visible veins to their blood supply, meaning they are the source causing the spider veins. Treating these main veins eliminates the smaller attached veins, reducing the number of injections needed.
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)
UGS helps provide safer and more effective sclerotherapy treatments. The ultrasound technology can be used to identify the vessels with blood flow going in the wrong direction that may be causing visible veins in the hands. This technology maps the target veins and guides the needle into the vein, allowing for more precise control over the direction of the injection.
Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is often used for large varicose veins and smaller veins that develop or remain after endovenous laser ablation or vein stripping.
How Many Hand Sclerotherapy Sessions Will I Need?
It typically takes two sclerotherapy sessions to eliminate the visible veins on the back of the hands.
When Will I See the Results of Sclerotherapy?
It may take a few weeks for the treated veins to be absorbed by the body. Patients usually see their final results several weeks after their last sclerotherapy treatment.
Is Sclerotherapy Safe for Hands?
The veins in the hands respond very well to sclerotherapy and compilations are extremely rare, making this a very safe procedure. Fortunately, the hands tend to maintain good blood flow in the healthy veins once the damaged veins are removed.
While uncommon, the potential risks and side effects of sclerotherapy include:
- Localized urticaria
- Hyperpigmentation
- Matting
- Cutaneous ulceration
- Deep vein thrombosis
Your vein specialist will review these with you in detail and answer any questions you may have.
Is Downtime Needed After Sclerotherapy?
No downtime or significant restrictions are required after sclerotherapy. Patients can immediately return to work and normal activities after treatment.
