Treatment For Leg Ulcers In Orange County

A venous skin ulcer is a shallow wound which develops when the leg veins don’t return blood back towards the heart the way they should. This is known as venous insufficiency. Leg ulcers are usually accompanied by other signs and symptoms associated with varicose veins.

Unfortunately, when varicose veins are left untreated for a long period of time, the constant pressure accumulating in the lower leg and ankle area causes skin changes and eventual breakdown of the skin to form to an ulcer. Treatment is normally to address the primary cause which is the varicose vein. Healing will often take place after the primary cause has been treated.

Some things can increase your risk of venous skin ulcers including:

  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Work that requires many hours of standing
  • Deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot) forms in the deep veins of the legs

If you have varicose veins and notice a darkening of the skin or dermatitis you may be at risk for venous ulcers. It’s best to treat the problem when you first notice the signs as this may prevent an ulcer from forming. If an ulcer does form, get treatment right away since new and smaller ulcers tend to heal faster than larger ones.

At California Vein Specialists, Dr. Leary treats varicose veins and uses the newest technology for venous leg ulcers. He will do a complete leg examination including an ultrasound.
