How Are Varicose Veins Diagnosed

Dr Leary will diagnose your varicose veins based on a physical exam. He will look at your legs while you’re standing or sitting with your legs dangling which allows the veins to dilate. He will ask about your symptoms, including any pain you’re having. He’ll also want to know about your family history.

An ultrasound will be done during the exam, which is used to see the veins’ structure, check the blood flow in your veins, and look for blood clots. The ultrasound shows details not visible from a surface examination of the skin.

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create pictures of structures in your body and is completely painless. Special attention is paid to perforator veins that contribute to the development of varicose veins. He will evaluate the valves in your legs by checking reflux times at the saphenofemoral junction (at the level of the groin), at the saphenopopliteal junction (behind the knee).

Valves that don’t function properly cause the blood to fall back towards the feet and increase the pressure in your legs causing congestion. Failure of the valves inside the veins causes increased pressure in the veins (venous hypertension) and ultimately the development of varicose veins.

All diagnostic tests and treatments are done by Dr Leary in our office. He will go over the best treatment plan for you and explain details of the treatment. You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have during the exam.
